The signs are a collapsing or drooping spear leaf at the centre, browning that spreads from the middle outwards rather than from the older outer fronds, and a soft or foul-smelling crown.
A dead palm should not be left standing indefinitely. The trunk softens as it decays and eventually loses the strength to hold the crown, and a decayed palm is considerably harder and more dangerous to dismantle than a sound one.
Palms That Have Outgrown Their Position
The commonest reason by far. A palm planted three metres from the house thirty years ago is now well above the roof, dropping heavy fronds and seed onto it, and there is nothing to be done about the height - a palm cannot be reduced. Unlike a broadleaf tree, you cannot shorten it and let it regrow. The height is the height.

A palm stump is different from a tree stump. There is no taproot and no spreading woody root plate - instead there is a dense fibrous root mass, and the trunk itself stays wet and dense at the base for a long time.
